Fertility & Self-limiting beliefs: 7 Ways Your Past Could Be Shaping Your Path to Parenthood

Hi, I'm Nicola

My journey to motherhood was a tapestry woven with challenges and triumphs, marked by the highs of success and the lows of setbacks. It’s this path, filled with personal learnings and the support of an incredible community, that inspired me to create a space for individuals and couples navigating the complexities of IVF.

What are Self-Limiting Beliefs?

Have you ever explored the idea of self-limiting beliefs? Even know what they are? Concerned they may be affecting your fertility? For example, of how our upbringing can influence our decision to start a family. Or how our past experiences, from cultural norms to family dynamics, can deeply impact our beliefs and attitudes towards pregnancy and parenthood. Understanding these influences and learning to navigate them can be a vital step in your fertility journey. Limiting beliefs often stem from past experiences. A belief that you are something or cannot do something or that certain things will never happen to you are all common limiting beliefs. There are many areas of your life in which you may find you have self-limiting beliefs.

Cultural norms and religious beliefs are powerful forces that can shape our perspectives including those we place upon fertility. Growing up, we may have absorbed messages about the ‘right’ time to start a family or the ‘ideal’ family size. These beliefs can create limiting thoughts and expectations that may not align with our desires and timelines. It’s essential to recognise that your journey is uniquely yours, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to starting a family. Setting aside societal pressures can empower you to make decisions that resonate with your heart and soul. But is it that easy to do?

Family dynamics and socioeconomic background can also play a significant role in shaping our views on parenthood. Suppose you grew up in a family environment surrounded by conflict, neglect, or instability. In that case, you may carry doubts about your ability to create a nurturing and loving family of your own. Similarly, financial constraints or feelings of unworthiness due to socioeconomic background can create barriers to starting a family. It’s crucial to acknowledge these limiting beliefs and work towards healing past wounds, building resilience, and cultivating a sense of self-worth that enables you to embrace the possibility of parenthood.

Psychological factors, such as past traumas, anxiety, or depression, can add layers of complexity to your fertility journey. If you’ve experienced emotional challenges in the past, you may have fears and uncertainties about pregnancy, childbirth, or parenting. Seeking support from mental health professionals, engaging in self-care practices, and exploring therapeutic services such as Embrace Fertility can help you address these concerns and cultivate emotional wellbeing as you prepare for the next chapter in your life.

Relationship dynamics and gender roles learned during childhood can also influence our perceptions of starting a family. Witnessing unhealthy relationship patterns or rigid gender expectations can create limiting beliefs about finding a supportive partner or balancing caregiving responsibilities. It’s essential to challenge these beliefs, communicate openly with your partner about your hopes and fears, and work together to create a partnership that supports your shared vision of parenthood.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, seeking regular medical care, and addressing any underlying health issues can positively impact your reproductive health and overall wellbeing. Building a strong support network of family, friends, and healthcare providers can provide you with the encouragement, guidance, and emotional sustenance you need as you navigate the ups and downs of trying to conceive.

By acknowledging the influences of your past and identifying limiting beliefs you can empower yourself to embrace the journey towards motherhood with courage and grace. Reach out for support and practice self-compassion. Start by identifying any self-limiting beliefs you may have.

Do any of these resonate with you?

I’m not good enough (past relationships romantic, family, education)

I’m too old to get pregnant (society)

I must be married before I start a family (religious/cultural norms)

I must not start a career until I’ve had a family (cultural norms)

I wasn’t part of a stable family therefore I am not capable of raising one (relationships and family support)

I can’t afford to take maternity leave (economic stress)

My mum had a traumatic childbirth (environment)

My partner might leave (past relationships)

 I’m too fat/thin/ill (self/self-worth)

My mum already has so much on with my brothers/sisters kids (self-worth)

Finally, ask yourself…Are there any reasons you might not want to get pregnant? This may sound like an unusual question to ask but subconsciously there may be hidden traumas or experiences which have been buried deep, so go with it! What comes to mind? Write down your thoughts as they come through. This could give you an insight as to any blockages.

Why are these beliefs limiting me?

Whether your beliefs are conscious or unconscious, they can create a mental barrier to what you truly want and desire. Once you are aware of a belief and understand where it has come from, you can work on letting it go and reframing your thoughts to support the desired outcome.

But how? First a snippet of science… The brain can change! Throughout life, your brain is forming neural connections. The more you do something, the stronger these connections. Learning something new means more neural connections. This means, if your current belief system is going against what you want in life, you can change it! Rewiring your belief system is a process but this is excellent news and means that we can do something to release our internal barriers.

Get started with a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) which can help you to reframe your thoughts. Take a look at some EFT meditations, set some time aside, and embrace the process of letting go of old beliefs!
